SEO Software Suites

There’s no search engine optimization program that’s going to do every thing for you. Even if it may seem like they do at times. Nothing substitutes getting your hands dirty with some testing and hard work. However, software can sure make your life a lot easier, save you serious man-hours, and probably teach a few things you didn’t know. That’s what it has done for me! If you’re serious about SEO, then I suggest you invest a little bit of money into some solid desktop software or purchase a professional online subscription somewhere.

Market Samurai is a great tool, especially for people with a limited budget. It does a nice job helping you identify keyword opportunities and comparing key aspects of your top SERP competitors. Although those are the two primary modules I use, it does provide several other helpful utilities too. Two important things it doesn’t provide is website optimization advice, or site auditing. Also the backlink analyzer doesn’t include insight into which links or nofollow, and there’s no scheduler so you can’t automate things like weekly rank checks. You’ll have to check your search engine rankings through it manually. But, at this price it’s still a really awesome utility for newbies and experienced SEOs alike. I recommend this tool for individual site owners, in-house SEOs, small businesses, bloggers, freelance writers and authors. Updates are always free, and you can buy it for a mere $97 if you purchase it within the trial period. WebCEO is one of the oldest desktop programs to assist with SEO. It is a very well-rounded suite that provides management tools for doing just about anything related to search engine optimization. My only gripes are the backlink analysis and website auditors. The backlink tool doesn’t provide nofollow information and is limited to just a few very small data sources, and the site auditor oftentimes take way too long to run. However, it’s good for tracking your progress, managing client projects, and optimizing as many websites as you need. You will have full access to the software after paying the initial fee, but after 3 months you’ll have to pay a small fee to get their latest knowledge base updates ongoing. • To-Do Checklist
  • Rank Tracking
  • Link Partnerships
  • Backlink Analysis
  • Keyword Research
Currently Web CEO Online covers the basics of just about every aspect of SEO. It’s not nearly as comprehensive as the desktop version, but does a good job of covering the basics. What makes it stand out from other services is the to-do checklists which walks you through optimizing and promoting your web projects, step-by-step. This is especially helpful for beginners. Recently there’s been several improvements in its keyword suggestion and competitor research modules, which is awesome. But there still isn’t much in the way of backlink analysis. The silver plan starts at $49/mo, but you can get started for free.

SEOmoz’s tools are great because there were created by experienced search optimizers. It’s tools (as a suite) are by far the best at providing important on-page optimization advice, reporting relevant site-audit information and analyzing backlinks. There’s also free search engine optimization toolbar that provides some great information for free, but completely unlocks for paid subscribers. The only area I felt the suite slightly lacked was automation control. And starting at $100/mo it can run on the expensive side for novices, small companies or individuals who only run one or two websites. However, it does offer a great community resource and training materials for people looking to learn SEM, which can help offset the cost for those companies. Plus, newbies can easily learn what’s really important from them, rather than trying cheap software elsewhere and possibly getting bad advice. You can read the SEOmoz PRO review or start a 30 day free trial.

  • On-Page Optimization
  • Website Auditing
Raven offers a great set of web utilities by taking some of the best niche tools available and providing access to them through its independent interface. I like the navigational layout and available features. However, there are two major areas it is definitely lacking in: web site auditing, and search engine optimization advice. Because of that, this tool won’t be very helpful for someone who isn’t very familiar with SEO already. But, I imagine it’s just a matter of time before there’s improvement in these areas because it’s already one of the best programs online. A slightly enhanced version will make it a force to be reckoned with because its got just about everything covered, including social media monitoring. Plans start a $99/mo, and you can also get a 30 day free trial.

Although I did my best to give you a well thought-out review of each of these products, there are truly only a couple of them I need to use regularly. And, I have my own ingnorances and biases, so if you disagree with me or know of a tool that has improved recently, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message so I can check it out.

Other resources you might want to consider are: AdvancedWebRanking (AWR), DIYSEO, SEOElite, iBusinessPromoter (IBP), SheerSEO, HubSpot, Searchmetrics Suite, SEObook and Traffic Travis.

If you know of any other products you think should make it on this list, please don’t hesitate to tell us about it.
