How to Get a DoFollow Link from Facebook

**4/20/11 – This may not work anymore. It doesn’t for me.
This is pretty straight forward and easy to do, but I’ve included a few images here to show what I have done to enable a DoFollow backlink to my website from my public Facebook profile. When you are logged in your links will be NoFollowed, but by doing what I’m going to show you here, your displayed website address will be a DoFollow backlink at your public Facebook profile URL when is viewed by logged out users and, of course, crawled by the search engines.

Facebook Profile Page

facebook dofollow back link

I’ve chosen to use a custom privacy setting by clicking on the “Custom” navigation link on the left. After that I clicked on the customize settings link as show circled in yellow.

Facebook Privacy Settings

On the customized settings page I chose to allow my website to be viewable by everyone.

There is no save button on this page, so you can just go back to your profile from here and your new setting should be saved. Last you need to have set a website address under your contact information as shown below.

Facebook Contact Information Settings

Now your first website address should show on your public Facebook profile – as a DoFollow link – like it does on mine.

    Hi Wesley,

I really like your SEO Blog – always informative. I am having a fit trying to figure out how to do this DoFollow backlink for Facebook on our site at:
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bellevue-WA/Brookside-Dental/132036486832749. Any thoughts??
Also, I was told you can get a Facebook URL that is “custom”, after a certain number of “Likes” so that all the numbers are dropped. Is that true?

    Gil

    Hi Gil,
As far as I know it only works for regular facebook profile pages, not fan pages. So, you could set up the dofollow link on the account that created the fan page, but not the for the fan page, if that makes sense.

As far as getting a custom URL goes, login to Facebook with the account that created the Brookside Dental page, and then literally go to http://www.facebook.com/username . Don’t change “username” to your username. Leave it as is. That should give you the option to change your profile and fan pages to a custom URL as long as you have enough fans. The number of keeps decreasing so I’m not sure how many you need, but you could give it a try. I only have 35 fans on one of my fan pages and it allowed me to have a custom URL. http://www.facebook.com/seattlewebservices.

    I hope that help!

    Hi Wesley,

I tried it but in source code all links seems nofollowed.

  • September 26th, 2010 at 11:21 pm Wesley LeFebvre said:

    Hey ?yinet,
Be sure to check when you are logged out. When you are logged in all of your website links are indeed nofollowed, but if you set it up like mine and log out the link that shows no longer has the nofollow attribute associated with it.

I don’t think a dofollow link from your Facebook is to helpfull. if it doesn’t get crawled by the Googlebot.

  • October 27th, 2010 at 10:45 pm Wesley LeFebvre said:

    Hi Froslo,
What makes you think it doesn’t get crawled by Googlebot? Mine profile is cached by Google and shows a PageRank 2.

  • October 29th, 2010 at 5:35 am Porwal said:

    Hey Wesley,

Your page indeed shows the dofollow link (when logged off), and that is what the bot will indeed see.
Good trick, I am going to try on mine now. Link from PR 10 site is awesome.

    cheers,
    JP

    Any ideas?

  • November 12th, 2010 at 8:11 am Wesley LeFebvre said:

Hi Mark, the URL you gave me doesn’t work so I’m removing it from your comment. You might want to try creating a custom URL. Log in to Facebook then go to: http://www.facebook.com/username . Do not replace username with your username. Go to the URL exactly theway I have included it here. That should take you to a page to set up a custom Facebook URL. Then, once you’ve selected one and written it down, log out and visit your new URL. Paste it here if you are continuing to have trouble and I will take a look.

I ran across something that said we could get a dofollow link. So, here I am reading your post. Great information! I’m heading over to FaceBook right now. I’m getting on your list too.

    Thanks and God bless.

You’re right, Billy. It looks like Facebook has changed the way profiles are displayed now. That sucks. I’ll have to check it out some more. Thanks for the update.

  • February 18th, 2011 at 10:07 pm Wesley LeFebvre said:

It looks like some profiles still show with a dofollow link like mine used to. I’ll have to figure out what changed with my profile when I have some more time.

  • February 18th, 2011 at 10:56 pm Billy said:

Looks like you might just have to update the privacy setting again. Facebook probably reverted it to “Friends Only” during some update. I just went and changed mine to “Everyone” and it’s working as a dofollow.

  • February 21st, 2011 at 12:17 pm Wesley LeFebvre said:

My privacy settings did not change ,so I tried changing them around anyway and it is still not working for me. I think maybe its because I upgraded all of my “pages” to the new Facebook page and some how that changed my main profile as well…?? That’s about all i can think of, because I see other a lot of other profiles still showing the old way.

I am using firefox and with it I have an add on that can tell if a link is no follow or dofollow. After trying your suggestion my links still show as nofollow. Is it possible that facebook changed something so all links are nofollow?

  • March 14th, 2011 at 8:00 am Wesley LeFebvre said:

Yeah, it appears Facebook has changed some things. Some accounts still have a dofollow backlink, whereas others – as well as mine – do not. My theory is that it has something to do with accepting the new Facebook business page updates. Do you have any Facebook “pages” – not your user profile – associated with your account?
